Antique brass cricket box
This unusual item is a victorian brass cricket box.
Crickets were kept as "pets" for their soothing "songs" and would have been kept in decorative boxes like this one. It originally started in China but grew popular with Victorians too.
All of those tiny holes would be air holes. Each one would have been hammered out by hand, along with the decorative pattern that is engraved in to the brass.
This one is missing its front lock clasp, but still has it's original hinge.
These decorative pieces make lovely ornaments nowadays, or jewellery boxes and trinket boxes.
